Col Hughes joined Canterbury in 1967 as a centre.

Progressing through the grades, Col received the opportunity to play first grade in the last premiership match of 1967 against North Sydney when Dick Webb was relegated to reserve grade.

Col came on as a replacement in the first grade Preliminary Final win against St George.

In 1968, he was a regular member of the reserve grade team and after captaining the first two games in third grade in 1969, he did not play again.
