Col Cooper joined Canterbury in 1950 as a centre.

The brother of Lionel, Cec and Reg Cooper, Col became a regular member of the reserve grade team and played on the wing.

Col received his first grade opportunity when Frank Flynn was injured for the last two games of the season.

Col secured a wing position in first grade for the next three seasons.
