Clive Gartner joined Canterbury in 1956 as a five eighth.
The brother of Jim and Keith Gartner, nephew of Joe Gartner, cousin of Ray Gartner and the son-in-law of the great Frank Sponberg, Clive progressed to become a regular member of the reserve grade team in his initial season.
He received the opportunity to play first grade when John Kell was injured.
In 1957, Clive continued in reserve grade but had moved to play in the centres. After another season in reserve grade in 1958, Clive was able to secure a regular first grade position in 1959.
In 1960, Clive returned to reserve grade but was on hand to play in the semi-final against Easts (Roosters) when Dick Pickett was injured.
Clive missed most of the 1961 and then the entire 1962 season with a shoulder injury before returning to become a regular member of the 1963 first grade team. He missed the 1964 season due to a broken jaw and mainly played reserve grade in 1965.
In 1966, Clive returned to the first grade team and in 1967, played in the Grand Final against South Sydney.
After a mixed season in 1968, he retired after two games in 1969 due to injuries.
Clive continued with the club and coached the Under 23 team in 1977. Clive has been on the Board of the Football Club and is also a Life Member of the Club.
In 2004, Clive was nominated for the Berries to Bulldogs 70 Year Team of Champions.
Clive is currently on the Bulldogs Ambassadors Club Committee.
