Charles joined the club for the inaugural season with no first grade experience before becoming a regular team member for three seasons.
A centre or five eighth, after playing the initial five games in reserve grade, Charles was promoted to first grade to fill the gaps in the backline caused by the rising injury toll.
In 1936, he played five eighth and provided a sound foil for half George Mason.
Charles played in Canterbury's inaugural first grade semi final in 1936.
He was moved to the centres for the Premiership matches in 1937 but when Cec Fifield joined the club for the City Cup matches, he was moved back to five eighth to partner Roy McCarter.
