Bruce McKinney joined Canterbury in 1963 as a prop forward.
He was a regular member of the third grade team and played in the Grand Final against St George. Bruce continued in third grade in 1964 and after his 1965 season was ruined by injury, he started the 1966 season in reserve grade.
He was promoted to first grade against Newtown when Keith Glen was relegated and was able to become a regular member of the team.
In 1967 and 1968, Bruce became a regular member of the reserve grade team.
