Brian Whitmore joined Canterbury in 1951 as a fullback.
Brian's club debut was the 1951 third grade semi-final against South Sydney. In 1952, Brian commenced the season in third grade but was able to secure the reserve grade position and play in the finals. Brian played in the reserve grade Grand Final against South Sydney.
In 1953, Brian continued in reserve grade and played first grade when Ron Willey and Fred Dunn were injured near the end of the season.
In 1954, Brian commenced the season as captain in reserve grade and was able to secure a regular spot in the first grade team.
In 1955, Brian only played one game late in the season in reserve grade. He continued in reserve grade in 1956, playing two additional games in first grade.
