Brian Thornton joined Canterbury in 1957 as a half back. Brian is the brother of Ron Thornton.

Brian became a regular member of the reserve grade side in his initial season and was the regular reserve grade half back for five seasons.

He received the opportunity to play first grade when his brother Ron Thornton was injured.

He captained the reserve grade team on 34 occasions.
