Bob Russell joined Canterbury in 1938 as a five eighth or centre. He quickly progressed through to be a regular in reserve grade in 1939.
He played centre in the Premiership winning reserve grade team in 1939.
Injury to Ted Anderson allowed Bob to play as the first grade five eighth for the entire City Cup campaign.
Bob played in the winning City Cup team of 1939.
Injuries in the backline in 1940, allowed Bob the opportunity to secure a position in the first grade team.
Bob played centre in the 1940 final against Easts (Roosters). He continued with the club for a number of seasons but mainly in the lower grades.
