Originally a St George junior, Bob Ambrose joined Canterbury in 1958 as a prop forward.

He progressed quickly through the grades to become a regular in first grade member in his initial season at the club.

In 1959, Bob became a regular in reserve grade and played in the Preliminary Final against North Sydney. In 1960, with Barry Nelson injured for the majority of the season, Bob secured a first grade position and played in the Semi-Final against Easts (Roosters).

In 1961, he returned to reserve grade and became a regular member of the third grade teams in 1962 and 1963.

Bob closed his playing career by playing in the 1963 third grade Grand Final against St George. He coached the third grade team in 1967.
