Billy Johnstone joined Canterbury in 1983 as a hooker.
Billy made his first grade debut against Illawarra in the first game of the season, he became the regular hooker for the next four seasons. He played in the 1983 Preliminary Final against Parramatta.
In 1984, Billy played most of the season in first grade but was relegated for Mark Bugden shortly before the finals.
Billy returned to first grade in 1985 and played in the 1985 Premiership winning team against St George.
In 1986, the hooking role alternated between Billy and Mark Bugden and Billy missed out on the finals.
In 1987 he joined St George to play 22 games that season. In 1988, Billy joined the Gold Coast team in its inaugural season, playing 61 games from 1988 to 1990.
An Australian Middleweight boxing champion, Billy became conditioner of the Gold Coast and returned to Canterbury as Head Conditioner, assisting Chris Anderson and then Steve Folkes.
In 2004, Billy was nominated for the Berries to Bulldogs 70 Year Team of Champions and was appointed Head Conditioner at the North Queensland Cowboys.
He has returned to the Gold Coast to be the Head Conditioner of the Titans in their inaugural season in 2007.
