Bill Petley joined Canterbury in 1956 as a goal kicking fullback.
After being a regular in third grade for most of the 1956 season, Bill was selected in first grade ahead of Brian Whitmore and Fred Dunn.
He joined Newtown in 1957 to play only one first grade game that season.
Bill returned to Canterbury to be the regular fullback for the next five seasons. He played in the 1960 semi-final against Easts (Roosters) and played in the successful Pre-Season Final against Western Suburbs in 1962.
In 1963, Bill moved to the wing when Les Johns joined the club.
In 2004, Bill was nominated for the Berries to Bulldogs 70 Year Team of Champions.
