Bernie Lowther played six Tests for New Zealand from 1970 to 1971 and played in the 1970 World Cup as a centre before joining Canterbury in 1972 and became a regular member of the first grade team.

Bernie became a regular centre in first grade in 1972, starting the season against St George.

In 1973 he played in every first grade game including the Preliminary Semi-Final against Newtown.

In 1974, Bernie started the season in first grade but late in the season was relegated to reserve grade to allow Terry Murphy in first grade.

Bernie played in the reserve grade Preliminary Final against Easts (Roosters).

In 1975, Bernie joined South Sydney to play 42 games from 1975 to 1976.

In 2004, Bernie was nominated for the Berries to Bulldogs 70 Year Team of Champions.
