Ben Gillies joined Canterbury in 1991 as a lock forward.

The brother of Simon Gillies, Ben became a regular member of the reserve grade team.

In 1992, Ben started the season in reserve grade and received the opportunity to play first grade against Brisbane as a hooker when Sean Skelton was relegated. Ben was later relegated for Geordi Peats but was a regular first grade replacement.

In 1993, Ben was a regular member of the reserve grade team and played in the Preliminary Final against Newcastle as a replacement.

In 1994, Ben returned to first grade when Geordi Peats was relegated until mid-season when relegated for Jason Hetherington.

In reserve grade, Ben played in the Semi-Final against St George and was a first grade replacement for the Semi-Final against Canberra.

In 1995, Ben started the season in first grade but was relegated for Jason Hetherington to become a regular member of the reserve grade team.

In 1996, Ben captained the reserve grade team for much of the season and in 1997 played his last game in the reserve grade Premiership winning team against Auckland.

Ben was later a trainer for the reserve grade team.
