Barry Smith joined Canterbury in 1960 as a centre.
Barry progressed quickly through the grades and was promoted to first grade when John Russell was relegated.
He secured a first grade position and commenced the 1962 season in the winning Pre-Season final team against Western Suburbs, scoring a length of the field intercept try to win the match for Canterbury.
In 1963, Barry commenced his season on the wing but injury interrupted his season. In 1964 season, he started the season late and could not maintain a position in first grade. Barry finished the season playing in the second row in third grade.
In 1965 and 1966, Barry became a regular first grade winger. In 1967, Barry moved to the forwards and became a regular in reserve grade. In 1968 and 1969, he returned to first grade as a second rower before retiring at the end of 1969.
Barry continued with the club as coach of the Under 23s in 1973, a team which played in the Preliminary Final. He returned to coach the Under 23s in 1975 which played in the Semi-Final and coached the reserve grade in 1976.
Barry became a Life Member of the Football Club before passing away in 2003.
In 2004, Barry was nominated for the Berries to Bulldogs 70 Year Team of Champions.
