Barry Phillis joined Canterbury in 1963 as a hooker.
After becoming a regular member of the third grade team in 1963, Barry was to miss most of the 1964 season and the entire 1965 season.
In 1966, Barry played in the opening match of the season in first grade against Western Suburbs before departing overseas for a number of years.
In 1968, Barry returned to Canterbury to start the season in first grade but was relegated to become a regular member of the third grade team and sporadically captained the team.
He spent most of 1969 in third grade before becoming a regular member of the reserve grade team in 1970 and captained the team in the Semi-Final against Balmain.
In 1971, Barry became reserve grade captain and led the team to win the Premierships in 1971 and 1972. In 1973, he started the season in first grade but his season was ruined by injury. Barry did manage to play in the reserve grade Semi-Final against Newtown and was a replacement in the first grade Preliminary Final against Newtown.
In 1974, he was appointed first grade captain and played most of the season until relegated for George Peponis. Barry played in the reserve grade Preliminary Final against Easts (Roosters).
He started 1975 in reserve grade but returned to first grade when George Peponis was relegated and captained the first grade team in the Preliminary Semi-Final against Parramatta.
In 1976, Barry was the captain of the reserve grade team and played five further games in 1977 when the team was impacted by injury.
In 1978, Barry was appointed coach of the Under 23 team for his only season in coaching.
He is a Life Member of the Football Club and was a Director of the Football Club.
Barry is currently on the Bulldogs Ambassadors Club Committee.
