Arthur Connell joined Canterbury in 1962 as a hooker.
He became a regular member of the third grade team in 1963 and played in the Grand Final against St George.
In 1964, Arthur became a regular member of the reserve grade team and received his opportunity in first grade as a replacement against Easts (Roosters) when Ken Dawson was used as a hooker for the injured Colin Goldspink.
