Alan Smith joined Canterbury in 1958 as a five eighth.
After becoming a regular member of the third grade team, Alan had secured a position in reserve grade by the end of the season.
He was to become the regular reserve grade five eighth for the next four seasons.
In 1961, Alan received his opportunity in first grade against Parramatta. In 1962, he played first grade near the end of the season when Ray Beavan's replacement, Don McIntyre, was relegated to reserve grade.
In 1963, Alan became a regular member of the third grade team and played his last game for the club in the Grand Final against St George.
