Alan Ross joined Canterbury in 1963 as a winger.

He became a regular member of the reserve grade team in his initial season and received the opportunity to play first grade against Newtown when Terry Johnston was injured. He then appeared in the reserve grade Preliminary Final against South Sydney.

In 1964, Alan kept his spot in reserve grade before starting the 1965 season in first grade. After maintaining his position for most of the season, he was relegated to reserve grade, allowing Clive Bryant to play first grade.

In 1966 Alan did not play until mid-season in third grade and started the 1967 season in third grade before retiring.
