Alan Hockley joined Canterbury in 1949 as a second row forward.

He did not establish himself in grade until 1951 when he became a regular in reserve grade. Alan was relegated to third grade to play in the 1951 third grade semi-final against South Sydney.

In 1952, Alan emerged to secure a first grade position at the expense of Ron Treuer. In 1953, Alan became a regular member of the reserve grade side before departing the club.

In 1958, Alan returned to the club to play one more season. He was a regular member of the first grade team playing prop.
