On 23 July 2020, it was announced that Trent Barrett would be the head coach of the Bulldogs from 2021 onwards on a three-year deal. Barrett began his head coaching role with an opening round defeat against Newcastle. In round 2 & 3 of the 2021 NRL season, Canterbury were kept scoreless by Penrith and Brisbane losing 28-0 and 24-0 respectively. 

In round 4 of the 2021 NRL season, Canterbury were defeated 38-0 by the South Sydney Rabbitohs in the traditional Good Friday game. Canterbury became only the second team in the NRL era to lose three straight games without scoring a point after Cronulla who achieved this in the 2014 NRL season. In round 7 of the 2021 NRL season, Barrett earned his first win as Canterbury head coach after the club snapped a six-game losing streak to beat Cronulla-Sutherland 18-12.

In round 16 of the 2021 NRL season, Canterbury were defeated 66-0 by the Manly Sea Eagles. It was Canterbury's third biggest defeat in their 86-year history. At the end of the 2021 NRL season, Canterbury finished last on the table and claimed their sixth Wooden Spoon after winning only three matches all year.

On 16 May 2022, Trent resigned from his role as head coach of the Bulldogs.
