Originally playing Rugby Union for St.George, Tedda Courtney played in the initial games of Rugby League against the New Zealand 'All Golds' in 1907.
In the newly formed Rugby League competition, Tedda played for North Sydney in the inaugural season in 1908.
Predominantly playing Prop, Tedda played for NSW and played in the initial Kangaroo Tour of 1908-09 in his first year of Rugby League.
Tedda played a total of 11 Tests for Australia and nine games for NSW. He also played in the 1911-12 Kangaroos.
On the local scene, he played for North Sydney between 1908 and 1910, playing 19 games. He then transferred to Western Suburbs for a long career from 1911 to 1924 for a total of 159 games.
In 1924, Tedda played in the same team with his son Ed.
For Canterbury's inaugural season, the club was able to obtain Tedda Courtney services and experience in what proved to be a difficult season.
