Phil Gould played 24 games for Penrith from 1976 to 1979, firstly as a fullback but later as a lock forward.

Phil joined Newtown in 1981 and played 18 games from 1981 to 1982, including the 1981 Grand Final against Parramatta.

In 1983, Phil joined Canterbury and started the season in first grade against Illawarra.

After being relegated for the return of Geoff Robinson, Phil was able to return to first grade for Mick Pittman, only to be unavailable through injury before the finals.

In 1984, Phil started the season in reserve grade but resumed in first grade in Peter Kelly's absence before injuries spoiled his season.

In 1985, Phil started the season in first grade but was relegated mid-season for David Gillespie and played in the reserve grade Semi-Final against Canberra as captain. He captained the first grade team on one occasion in 1985.

In 1986, Phil joined Souths to play 24 games that season before returning to Canterbury in 1987 as the reserve grade coach.

Phil's team made the finals and in 1988 he Phil was appointed first grade coach.

Phil's team played in the Premiership winning game against Balmain.

After an unsuccessful 1989, Phil joined Penrith to coach the team to the Grand Final against Canberra in 1990.

In 1991, Phil coached the Premiership winning game against Canberra.

He was appointed NSW coach in 1992 and coached NSW on 24 occasions from 1992 to 2004.

Leaving Penrith at the end of 1994, Phil joined the Roosters from 1995 to 1999 and thereafter held positions as coaching director.
