Alby Why played 10 games for South Sydney in 1930 as a winger.

The brother of South Sydney international Jack Why, Alby mainly played in the lower grades.

In 1950 became coach of Canterbury for one season. With the departure of Vic Bulgin in 1951, Alby returned to coach the team again and remained until the end of the 1952 season.
